The Roots Hold Benefit Event, Sign to Def Jam
by HighVoltage
October 8, 2005
It has been a been a busy month for the hardest working band in Hip-Hop. The Roots recently held a benefit concert for Katrina victims at the prestigious Kimmel Center in Philadelphia last month. It was an important night of the band's career, not only to raise awareness of the hurricane's devastation, but it also marked the first time a Hip-Hop act played at the illustrious venue. Check out the media coverage, press release, as well as the complete press conference from The Roots here.

In other news, TheRootsLive.com team would like to congratulate The Roots for signing with the most famous Hip-Hop label, Def Jam. "It's a legacy, it's historical," Questlove said about their new label. "Of course, for the Roots, the most important thing for us is providing grade-quality, hip-hop connoisseur music. So we're very excited to have a new home."

The future certainly looks bright, and don't forget to look out for their newest release, Home Grown Vol. 1 and 2. These two albums will be a compilation of unreleased material, b-sides and other rarities. Look for both albums to hit shelves November 15.

Now, on to the main reason why you are here, the shows. This month we have three new shows for you to rock out to. In celebration of Soulive's latest release, Breakout, the Featured Show of The Month comes from The Fire Department Band (a side project of Soulive's Eric Krasno and Neal Evans). This show took place at the Knitting Factory in New York City back in December of 2003, and was supposed to feature only Pharoahe Monch and a few other guests along with the band. However, halfway through the show, Black Thought, Dice Raw and Mack Dubb unexpectedly showed up, hit the stage and damn near tore the roof off the Knitting Factory.

Some of you have requested more shows from overseas tours, outside the US, so this month we are happy to bring you a show from Copenhagen, Denmark at Vega. This set is from 1999 and is going to make a great addition to your live collection.

And last, but certainly not least we have a show from the historic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. The show is from the Coors Light Mountain Jam Festival back in 2003 and features fan-favorite underground artist, Cody "Two T's and a Nut" Chestnutt playing with the band on The Seed.

It has been just over a month since our re-launch and we would like to say thank you for all of the positive feedback about the site. Next month, along with great new live music, we plan to launch the Features section of the site, so stay tuned for future developments in early November.
