Alright guys, we know it’s been a while, but we’re taking a break from the summer sunshine and ocean breeze to bring you a
brand-spanking-new update, full of all the goodness you’ve come to expect from TheRootsLive.
Leading off is our featured show from the Roseland Ballroom in New York City, recorded
March 14, 2003. This killer show, brought together by NYC’s Hot 97 radio station, showcases
The Legendary on their A-game at the height of the Phrenology tour. But if that
wasn't enough,
they brought some friends with them, including hip-hop veterans Brand Nubian, Nice & Smooth,
and Special Ed, in addition to Skillz, Musiq and Cody ChesnuTT.
Next up to bat is a very special show. In September 2005, The Roots held a highly-regarded show at the
Kimmel Center in Philadelphia,
which fans have been foaming at the mouth for a recording of. So without further ado, we present... The Roots the day AFTER the
Kimmel Show!
This show,
recorded at American University, is nothing shabby though. It was the first since Maimouna Youssef’s departure and features some resurrected
Roots classics, in addition to Game Theory’s first single, “Don’t Feel Right”.
Since we like to keep the fans on their toes, this month we’re fulfilling our promise by including more videos. In this update,
we proudly present The Roots kickin a freestyle session on
BET's Rap City from 2002, as well as a live television performance of “What They Do”
back in 1997 from a European network.
This inning isn’t over quite yet though. Our ongoing feature, Live With The Legendary: The Evolution of The Roots, continues with Phrenology,
capturing the era between 2002 and 2004. As always, you will find
exclusive commentary, photographs and rare, unreleased performance audio that
you won’t find anywhere else! Additionally, our Discography section is now active, thanks to our
friends at
TheRootsArchive.com!
On a more somber note, we’d like to send our heartfelt condolences and wishes to the family and friends of Mpozi Mshale
Tolbert. For those that don’t know, he was a pivotal factor
in The Roots' early success, capturing many of their early
moments through his breathtaking photography. We were blessed to have worked with
Mpozi over the past year, as he was happy to contribute many of his photographs to our
Live With The Legendary feature. Please take a moment to
view a few online tributes celebrating Mpozi’s life (Okayplayer,
AOL Black Voices, Indy Star, Indy Star Video Piece).
Mpozi, 34, passed well before his time and will be greatly missed,
but he will live
on through his wonderful work.
Most importantly, be sure to pick up The Roots' Def Jam
debut, Game Theory, in stores August 29!
?uestlove describes the record as "very mature, serious and
very dark." The album features guest appearances by Peedi
Peedi, Dice Raw and the grand return of Malik B., who
appears on three tracks. The early response to the
record has been phenomenal and About.com claims it is a "Big win for The Roots".
We hope you will enjoy this update, and be on the lookout because our next update will be
one of the site’s biggest yet. Now, download some hype live music, hit the beach and
stay cool, muhfuckas.
Peace!
