The Roots Live has been on a massive hitting streak as of late, and this month is no
exception. We are pleased to hook you up with
plenty of treats this month.
Firstly, our staff would like to extend our condolences and blessings to the family, friends, and fans of James Yancey, a.k.a Jay Dilla.
He was a forerunner in hip-hop and was your favorite producer's favorite producer. As a tribute to him, we're proud to present a new feature,
An Homage To Jay Dee (1974 - 2006),
which is dedicated to his music. We have several rare audio treats including hard to find songs, live
performances and DJ sets, plus the exclusive Live Tribute to Jay Dee,
mixed by DJ Illipse
for TheRootsLive.com.
But that's not all we have for you this month, in fact, we're just getting started.
Also on the table are two brand-spanking-new Roots shows this month.
First, we have The Legendary rocking the Central Park Summer Stage
on June 28th, 2005 for Marc Ecko's Save The Rhinos Benefit.
As if the show wasn't good enough as is, The Roots were joined onstage by
Mos Def for a very special performance of Double Trouble.
Vernon Reid filled in for
Kirk Douglas on guitar that night as well as the welcome
addition of Maimouna Youssef (aka Luna E. from Cirius B.)
on back up vocals. Truck North and Mack Dubb make guest spots at the show as well.
And as an added bonus, we included the entire opening set by De La Soul, as well as
pictures from the event, which featured special
guests Mos Def, Sadat X, Dres (of Black Sheep) and MF Doom. We also have
a great show from 1997, that finds The Roots tearing up
The Forum in London.
This show is a prime example of Rahzel in his prime,
and is most certainly worth a listen.
Enough new goodies for you this month? We don't think so!
Adrian Ruhi's feature story,
“Live with The Legendary”, continues with the
addition of Things Fall Apart, documenting The Roots' experience between 1999 and 2001 and of course
featuring exclusive commentary, rare photos and audio
of performances from the era.
Finally, i'm sure you are already aware, but Dave Chappelle's Block Party
is now in theatres across America. The concert film features The Roots,
Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def,
dead prez, Erykah< Badu, Jill Scott, Kanye West,
Dave Chappelle
and the reunion of The Fugees. Directed by
Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind),
the film captures the essence and emotion of the historic
concert, leaving many
reviewers jaw-dropped. Questlove mastered
the soundtrack to the film, which is due to hit store
shelves on March 14th on Geffen records.
{Deep breath) ... well that's all she wrote for this month
... enjoy the new ish, and see you
in the near future!
